Of all the documents in an Italian study abroad application, the ISEE Parificato is the one Indian families prepare too late — and it is the one that determines whether you receive the government scholarship.

The ISEE Parificato is Italy's income and assets assessment for international students. Without it, you cannot apply for the DSU scholarship. The calculation takes time, requires documents that need preparation from India, and must be completed by a specific deadline. Most students who miss the scholarship deadline miss it because of the ISEE — not because they were ineligible.

What is the ISEE Parificato?

The ISEE (Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente) is Italy's equivalent of an income assessment. For Italian students, it is calculated from their Italian tax data automatically. For international students, a special version is used — the ISEE Parificato — which requires income and asset documentation from the student's home country, submitted to an Italian CAF office (Centro di Assistenza Fiscale, a government-registered tax assistance centre).

The ISEE Parificato produces a number — your ISEE score. This score determines both your eligibility for the DSU scholarship and the amount you receive. A lower ISEE score means higher scholarship benefit.

What documents your family needs to prepare from India

This is the part that requires advance preparation — ideally 2 to 3 months before your planned arrival in Italy.

Asset documents

The translation requirement

Every document submitted to the CAF must be in Italian — which means sworn Italian translation of every income and asset document. This translation must be done by a sworn translator (traduttore giurato), not a general translation service.

The timeline that surprises most families: Gathering income and asset documents from India: 2 to 4 weeks. Getting sworn Italian translations done: 1 to 2 weeks. CAF appointment and ISEE calculation: 1 to 2 weeks. Total minimum: 4 to 8 weeks. If you arrive in Italy in September and the DSU bando closes in September or October, you have very little time. Start before you leave India.

How the ISEE score affects your scholarship

The ISEE score bands and their scholarship implications vary by regional DSU authority. As a general guide:

These thresholds are approximate and differ by region. ER.GO in Bologna, EDISU in Turin, and DiSCo in Rome each publish their own bando with specific ISEE thresholds. Check the official bando for your university's region each year.

The property complication

Family-owned property in India is included in the ISEE Parificato calculation. This surprises many families — particularly those who own their home in India but have modest income.

The property is included at a calculated value based on the document you provide. The valuation methodology differs from Italian property valuations. In practice, a family-owned home in Patna or Indore at Indian property valuations typically adds less to the ISEE score than the same family's equivalent in an Italian city would. But it does add something — which is why families with moderate income but significant property assets sometimes calculate a higher ISEE than expected.

If your family owns significant property, calculate your approximate ISEE before committing to an Italian university, so you know whether to plan financially with or without the scholarship.

What happens if you miss the bando deadline

The DSU bando is a competition notice with a hard closing date. Applications submitted after the deadline are not processed — there is no late acceptance, no appeal, and no exception for students who were not informed in time. If you miss the bando, you wait a full academic year for the next one.

This is the practical reason why ISEE preparation must start before you leave India — not after you arrive, not after you settle in, not once the semester starts. The bando deadline waits for no one.

The CAF office is your ally: CAF offices across Italy are accustomed to international students with complex documentation from non-EU countries. When you arrive, contact your university's international office for the CAF nearest to campus. Bring all your Indian documents — originals and translated copies. The CAF staff will guide you through the calculation. This is a government service that exists to help students exactly like you.

One more consideration — the academic progress requirement

The DSU scholarship is not a one-time award. It is renewed each year — but renewal requires academic progress. Most regional DSU authorities require scholarship students to have accumulated a minimum number of credits (CFU) by specific dates. Falling behind academically risks losing the scholarship for the following year.

Know your university's CFU requirements and the DSU authority's renewal criteria before you rely on the scholarship for your second-year planning.
