Before leaving India: the one-time costs

Everything spent before boarding the flight, including preparation, documents, and travel. Bihar is one of the more administratively complex states for attestation, which pushed document costs higher than average.

Item Amount (₹)
IELTS exam ₹17,000
Visa application fees (Italian consulate) ₹14,500
Medical insurance (mandatory for student visa) ₹10,000
University application fees5 universities × €40 each, at ₹93/€ ₹18,560
Document attestationHRD attestation, MEA apostille, translation — Bihar route is complex, involves state education dept + MEA ₹28,000
ISEE Parificato preparationCAF agent fee, document translation to Italian, coordination ₹15,000
Admify AI Readiness Report + Application BlueprintUsed instead of a traditional consultancy ₹22,998
Traditional consultancy feeArjun paid ₹0 here — reference point only ₹0
Flights (Patna → Kolkata → Rome, connecting) ₹52,000
Total before leaving India ₹1,77,058

Show funds requirement. For a 2-year Masters, Arjun needed to demonstrate €16,000 (~₹14.88L) in his bank account for the visa interview. This money is not spent — it is held and shown. He used a bank guarantee from his father's savings account. After visa approval, the funds returned to normal use. This is frequently confused with the actual cost.

Year 1 recurring costs in Bologna

Monthly cash spend for a student in university DSU accommodation with full scholarship benefits. The scholarship covered hostel and meals entirely — Arjun's out-of-pocket monthly cash was only the basics.

Accommodation (DSU hostel, shared twin) €0 / month
Meals (university canteen, 2 meals/day) €0 / month
Groceries and extra meals €80 / month
Transport (annual student pass, Bologna) €4.17 / month
Italian SIM (Iliad) €7 / month
Personal and social €100 / month
Books and stationery €20 / month
Total monthly cash spend ~€211 (~₹19,600)

Annual out-of-pocket: approximately €2,532 (~₹2.35L).

"In Patna, a decent PG costs ₹8,000 a month. My hostel in Bologna costs nothing. The canteen gives me two cooked meals a day. My monthly spend dropped to less than what my rent cost at home."

What the DSU paid in Year 1

The following is based on Arjun's actual ER.GO scholarship award letter for the 2024–25 academic year. The amounts reflect his income bracket (ISEE Parificato ~€13,000) and accommodation situation (DSU hostel).

ER.GO Scholarship — 2024–25 Award

Tuition waiver
University of Bologna income-bracket fee
€156
Cash stipend
Paid in 2 tranches: Oct 2024 (~60%) + Apr 2025 (~40%) after merit check
€5,520
Hostel value
Residenza Universitaria, shared twin room, utilities included
€4,800
Meal voucher value
2 meals/day × ~200 university days at campus canteen
€3,200
Total scholarship value Year 1 €13,676
(~₹12.7L)

The net position at the end of Year 1

Combining the pre-departure one-time costs, the in-Italy recurring costs, and the scholarship received:

Net Year 1 position
+₹9.46L
Arjun's Italian education paid him more than he spent in Year 1
Total Year 1 cost
−₹3.24L
Scholarship received
+₹12.7L
Year 1 recurring (in Italy)
₹2.35L
Pre-departure (amortised 50%)
₹0.89L

The pre-departure costs are amortised across 2 years since the flight, documents, and visa preparation serve the full degree. In Year 2, with no flight cost and no repeat document preparation, the net position improves further.

What people get wrong about Italy

The upfront cost looks intimidating — ₹1.77L before you even board the plane. But that number is mostly visa bureaucracy and flights, not tuition. And within 4 months of arriving, the first scholarship tranche lands in your account and absorbs it entirely.

The hostel and canteen are the numbers that shock people most. In Patna, a reasonable PG costs ₹8,000 per month. In Bologna, the university hostel is free. The meal vouchers provide two cooked meals a day. The remaining cash expenditure drops to less than ₹20,000 per month for a student who lives simply — and that includes a social life, not just the bare minimum.

The comparison that matters. The question is not "how much does Italy cost?" The question is "how much more does Italy cost than staying in India for a mediocre private university?" For many families in Arjun's situation, the honest answer is: less. Sometimes significantly less.

What this would have cost with a traditional consultancy

Standard India consultancy fees for Italy study abroad range from ₹1.5L to ₹2.5L, excluding the commission the consultancy may receive from the university after enrolment.

Arjun used Admify's AI Readiness Report (₹3,999) and Application Blueprint (₹19,999) — a combined spend of ₹22,998. Against the low end of the traditional consultancy range (₹1.5L), that is a saving of ₹1.27L. Against the high end (₹2.5L), the saving is ₹2.27L.

The more significant difference is in the shortlist. A commission-earning consultancy's recommendations are shaped by 3–5 partner institutions. Arjun applied to 5 universities shortlisted by the Admify AI from the full landscape, ranked partly by DSU funding reliability in his subject. Bologna was not the most obvious recommendation — it was the right one for his profile and his scholarship bracket.

Year 2 and beyond

The merit threshold for ER.GO scholarship renewal required a minimum of 40 CFU completed in Year 1. Arjun passed 8 of 9 first-year exams and earned 53 out of a possible 60 CFU — comfortably above the threshold. The scholarship renewed automatically, with identical amounts for Year 2.

He is expected to graduate in June 2026. He has applied for Italy's post-study work permit (permesso di soggiorno per attesa occupazione). He is currently interviewing at two Bologna-based software companies. Monthly starting salaries for Computer Engineering graduates in Bologna range from €1,600 to €2,200 net of Italian tax.

The full 2-year picture: Total spent over 2 years (including pre-departure, in-Italy costs, Admify fees): approximately ₹8.5L. Total scholarship received over 2 years: approximately ₹25.4L. Net position after 2 years: approximately +₹16.9L. Degree acquired: Masters in Computer Engineering from one of Italy's oldest and most respected research universities.
